NY Independent Coffeehouses

The New York Times photography blog Lens recently devoted a chunk of space to independent coffeehouses, through the camera work of noted photographer Dima Gavrysh. The artist spent a few days in several of NYC’s high-quality-coffee hotspots, and the resulting portfolio is worth scrolling through for a variety of reasons—pretty spaces, pretty faces and NO latte art. But the most noteworthy aspect of the 11 photos is the sense of joy that seems to be oozing through the shops. Even when a harried employee tries to keep hold of an armful of disposable cups or a barista looks out at her line of waiting customers, these spots come across as places of peacefulness and purpose. No wonder the customer waiting for his pour-over in the seventh photo is smiling so broadly.
